“New Year, new me.” Every January, in pursuit of this goal, we embrace all sorts of less-than-scientific advice, such as the power of healing crystals and the wisdom of star charts. It’s one time of year when we’re inclined to give into our New Age impulses—so why not use horoscopes as a fresh way to consider our fashion choices? According to Dr. Kayse Budd, a California-based astrologer and self-professed fashion fan, consulting the Zodiac can be a fun, playful way to recast your closet. Here, a celestial shopping guide for each sign to inspire you in 2018.

Aries, March 21 – April 19

Gucci Ophidia small shoulder bag, $1,980,; Rixo London Ava top, $198,; Takesh Eyewear Jadore sunglasses, $169,; Annie Costello Brown mini rain earrings, $250,; Galvan asymmetrical halter-neck dress, $1,595,

While everyone else follows the crowd, Aries is in the front, leading the pack. Heads turn when the fire sign walks into a room—probably thanks to their bold outfit choices. “You can think of [Aries] as dropping a spot of oil into a hot pan,” Budd says. Flashy prints and sizzling hues of red and orange are wardrobe “neutrals,” which Aries signs dress up with a treasure trove of statement jewelry and a different It bag each week. Proceed with caution, though: Budd warns that the often-impulsive Aries tends to go overboard, putting pressure on their bank account.
Taurus, April 20 – May 20

Le Lion the petite crewneck sweater, $525,; Attico Raquel velvet dress, $809,; Hermès Springs scarf 90, $395,; Prada brand-patch loafers, $718,; Burberry the Brighton extra-long car coat, $2,095,

Quality over quantity is the Taurus mantra when shopping: You’re more likely to find this beauty-obsessed sign cruising down Fifth Avenue or Via Monte Napoleone than sifting through the sales racks at Zara. “Expensive fabrics such as silk, velvet, and cashmere appeal to the Taurus’s sensual side,” Budd notes. “They have very rich tastes.” With a deep appreciation for the finer things in life, they are oftentimes able to spot a designer fake from a mile off. And though Taurus is not normally one to stray too far from their trusted heritage labels, they may be surprised to find their fashion choices take an experimental turn this year, thanks to the subtle influence of rebellious Uranus.

Gemini, May 21 – June 20

Réalisation Par the Christy – As If dress, $180,; Vivetta Bruni collar, $182,; Stine Goya Vinnie pants, $118,; Susan Alexandra Healthy bag, $195,; Roxanne Assoulin tapestry bracelets, $235,

“Outfit repeater” is one term that is rarely used to describe a Gemini. Their closets seem to have revolving doors and are refreshed with each new season. Due to a deep-seated fear of repetition and routine, “Geminis tend to change their style frequently, and they have a lot of movement in their clothes,” Budd explains. To mirror the frenzy of their busy social calendars, Geminis favor anything with a whimsical, fun pattern, complemented by playful, Surrealist-inspired accessories. “They’re kind of masters of accessorizing,” Budd notes. At the end of the day, fashion is just one more outlet Gemini uses to communicate with the world around them.
Cancer, June 21 – July 22

Erdem Osiris V-neck silk-satin dress, $1,833,; Frame ruffled silk-crepon blouse, $163,; By Malene Birger Kimberley satin midi skirt, $495,; The Row Gibet cashmere sweater, $990,; Journelle Isabel balconette bra, $84,

A true hopeless romantic, a Cancer wears their heart on their sleeve. “They have a very classic, feminine, motherly energy,” says Budd. Preferring not to draw attention, this emotional water sign favors softer silhouettes with a subtle color palette of pale blues, grays, and shades of white. A Cancer’s elegant wardrobe is very much reflective of all the time they spend with their head in the clouds, daydreaming. And although power dressing may be the current craze, Budd notes that come 2019, Cancer will prove to be a powerful fashion influence, causing us all to get more in touch with our sensitive sides.

Leo, July 23 – August 22

PH5 Ziva color-blocked asymmetrical skirt with studs, $425,; Neous Aunty leather and suede pumps, $530,; Sandy Liang cotton shirt with ruffle trims and cut-out back, $359,; Art School Euphoria corduroy trenchcoat, $1,183,; Danse Lente Johnny bucket bag, $385,

Leos tend to run late, because they spend so much of their time in front of the mirror, getting ready. Considerable thought and effort go into each outfit, making Halloween their favorite holiday. “Leos are creative, bold, they like to dress up and dress for the occasion,” says Budd. They also pride themselves on their wide knowledge of brands and are constantly on the hunt for the latest names in fashion. That one new designer everyone is talking about now? Chances are, Leo heard about them months ago. And with the moon, ruler of our unconscious mind, in this sign until November, Budd explains that Leo’s flair for dramatic dressing is likely to be felt all over.

Virgo, August 23 – September 22

J.Crew any day pants in stretch ponte, $50,; Repetto Lili leather ballerina flats, $365,; Everlane cashmere crop mockneck top, $100,; Mansur Gavriel large black tote, $585,; Maje tweed dress, $470,

“All work, no play” are the words Virgo lives and shops by. “They’re known for being of service and being dutiful, and they tend to dress in a way that reflects that,” says Budd. A Virgo’s closet, full of conservative shift dresses and practical cardigans, is meant to be admired for its morality, not its sex appeal. There is far too much work to be done to have an exaggerated shirt sleeve getting in the way. And with their extreme attention to detail, Virgo will never exit the house without double-checking that no blouse has been left untucked, no shoelace is untied, and no stray hair has fallen out of place.

Libra, September 23 – October 22

Manolo Blahnik Nadira crystal-embellished pointy-toe pumps, $1,030,; Roksanda Loren sleeveless silk-trimmed cady dress, $1,670,; Céline medium clasp bag in box calfskin with patina, $3,950,; Prada pinup print midi skirt, $915,; Marco de Vincenzo Prince of Wales check coat, $781,

Scorpio, October 23 – November 21

Helmut Lang stretch-leather miniskirt, $680,; Topshop clean vinyl trenchcoat, $100,; Nanushka Pyramid cropped embellished high-rise straight-leg jeans, $290,; Dolce Vita Bardot leather combat booties, $80,; Velvet Talisia cotton turtleneck top, $99,

Scorpios love to contradict themselves. Their style can be both powerful and sexy, yet still very low-maintenance and simple. Like Cancer, this water sign tends to have an emotional, feminine core, but they don’t usually express it through their outfit choices, instead preferring to dress in all black or tough leather. While some Scorpios take an interest in clothing, a lot find what they wear to be irrelevant. Brave and assertive in their personal and professional lives, Scorpios often see fashion as “unnecessary, because they know that their power emanates from within,” says Budd.

Sagittarius, November 22 – December 21

Halpern halter sequin dress, $1,860,; Vita Kin bouclé embroidered mid-weight linen blouse, $1,049,; Aobei seven-chakra gemstone pendant necklace, $10,; Miu Miu crystal-embellished denim jacket, $1,608,; Figue embroidered mules, $550,

Capricorn, December 22 – January 19

& Other Stories tailored blazer, $215,; Mark Cross Grace large leather box bag, $2,495,; Acne Studios Trea cropped wool straight-leg pants, $360,; Baserange off-white T-shirt, $62,; Re/Done No. 23HR1123340 jeans, $300,

Capricorn is all about functional dressing, this year especially. “They tend to want to dress for success and look polished,” Budd explains. Tailored jackets and trousers, as well as basic tees and perfect-fitting jeans provide the main foundation for Capricorn’s wardrobe. But best of all? Their responsible, high-quality clothing purchases mean that they’re never left stressing over what to wear each morning, and it’s rare that they find themselves not dressed appropriately for the weather. Everyone else is amazed at how Capricorn always manages to look so put-together.

Aquarius, January 20 – February 18

Saks Potts Lucy wave-pattern shearling jacket, $1,190,; Salondeju wave pumps, $256,; Hades Alphabet I knit sweater, $217,; Ganni Fayette silk dress, $418,; Pat McGrath Labs Mothership I Eyeshadow Palette, $125,

No one tells an Aquarius what to do—or what to wear. This independent air sign may be the least trend-sensitive, but only because they’re usually the trendsetters. Aquariuses march to the beat of their own drum, usually following their own impulses about what is cool, Budd explains. Naturally shy around people they don’t know, it is through their distinct personal style that they can express those strange personality quirks others find to be so endearing. It’s hard to pin an Aquarius to any particular silhouette or color, since they’re all such free spirits, but in most cases unusual hair and makeup choices play a key role in their overall look.

Pisces, February 19 – March 20

Ciao Lucia Pearl Ludavica top, $265,; Area Blix strapless tube dress, $491,; Majorica sterling silver imitation black baroque pearl drop earrings, $80,; Fleur du Mal cowl-neck spaghetti-strap slip, $485,; Peter Pilotto embroidered asymmetrical crepe-cady skirt, $938,

Pisces is “the natural mermaid of the Zodiac,” Dr. Budd says. The most bohemian of the bunch, this water sign is usually drawn toward flowy, ethereal clothing in pearly, iridescent fabrics and colors such as teal, blue, and purple. Their softer style choices reflect their overall laid-back lifestyle and friendly disposition. Often told they are wise beyond their years, Pisces are very much in touch with their inner emotions and successfully translate their thoughts into art, whether that be paint on a canvas or lyrics to a song. Funnily enough, Budd cites the ongoing, overall Pisces influence as a possible cause for all the hype surrounding Coachella and festival dressing.
